Ecological models at the interface of empirical and theoretical research

Description:
Research in mathematical ecology is informed, both directly and indirectly, by empirical studies. Empirical work produces data necessary for model parameterization and also tests the biological hypotheses which drive highly theoretical work. At the same time, questions arising from empirical studies propel us to employ new and innovative mathematical methods which can address application-level concerns. In this session, we showcase a variety of speakers who are connected by the incorporation of empirical work and mathematical methods in their research. They integrate biological expertise, data, and models in a myriad of ways, highlighting the different aspects of research in this area. We hope the audience will appreciate how empirical and theoretical approaches complement one another and come away with ideas to use similar methods in their own work.
